How to get to Humphrey Head

Humphrey Head Outdoor Centre is situated in South Cumbria, just on the outskirts of the Lake District National Park. The centre is easy to get to by car or minibus, just a 30 minute drive from the M6. To navigate here, use the details below:

Google Maps/Waze: search “Humphrey Head Outdoor Education Centre”

Or for our full address, see the details in the footer of any page on our website.

Getting here by coach

The final hill up to our centre is very steep and has a sharp turning, so if you and your group are arriving by coach, you will need to be dropped at the bottom of the hill and walk up. Please make sure your group are aware of this, and pack their luggage in a way which is easy to carry. There are also no turning circles at the road end, so coaches will either need to reverse a short distance (approx 300m), or to drop passengers further back along the road where they are able to turn around. Longer coaches sometimes find it easier to travel through Flookburgh to get to the centre, as the road is a little wider. Please make sure you discuss these factors with your coach provider, and get in touch if you need any additional support such as minibus shuttles.

Getting here by Public Transport

It is also possible to get to Humphrey Head by public transport, by getting the bus or train to the nearby villages of Cark or Allithwaite, then either walking into the centre along the coastal path or back-roads (20-40 minutes depending on route) or arranging a taxi or minibus shuttle for the final section. Get in touch if you’d like to add this option to your booking.

By Bus: the 530 bus runs approximately once every 2 hours from Kendal to Cartmel, stopping in Allithwaite.

By Train: the centre lies roughly equidistant between two train stations- Cark, and Kents Bank, both on the south coast train line between Barrow and Lancaster.

Alternative navigation route after high rain

Please be aware that after periods of heavy rain, the “usual” route to the centre from Allithwaite can become flooded. An alternative route is available by driving further along the road to the village of Flookburgh, and turning towards the headland from there. This is especially relevant during the autumn and winter months, so please keep an eye on the weather in the week before your stay, and plan accordingly.
